Why this training matters
As the ageing population grows, so does the need for supportive, gentle, non-invasive approaches that help people feel more at ease in their bodies.
For massage therapists and bodyworkers, understanding how factors such as balance, mobility and functional movement can shift with age is becoming increasingly important.
This virtual training series explores current research and emerging thinking around the relationship between TMJ function, brain health, balance and general wellbeing.
You’ll learn practical, gentle techniques designed to support comfort, relaxation and confident movement within your professional scope—without making medical claims or stepping outside safe practice boundaries.
Over three live training sessions
You’ll receive an evidence-informed, research-aware overview of current thinking, including:
How TMJD may relate to sleep, balance and cognitive function.
Emerging theories about glymphatic flow and brain-clearance mechanisms.
How long-term pain, stress and poor sleep can influence a client’s wellbeing, confidence and overall experience.
Practical, gentle ways to support comfort, relaxation and confident movement within your professional scope.
You’ll also be encouraged to think critically, apply professional judgement, and stay within safe practice boundaries at all times.
Sessions are available on Zoom and inside the dedicated Facebook Group.

What you will accomplish
Day 1
TMJD and Brain Health
There is growing interest in how jaw function, sleep quality, balance and brain health may be inter-related. Research into topics such as glymphatic “brain-clearance” pathways, sleep disturbance and chronic pain is evolving quickly.
This training offers an evidence-informed, observational overview of:
Current thinking on how TMJD may relate to sleep, balance and cognitive function.
Emerging theories about glymphatic flow and brain-clearance mechanisms
How long-term pain, stress and poor sleep can influence clients’ sense of wellbeing and confidence.
Learn about key elements often associated with ageing—such as changes in memory, cognitive processing, emotional wellbeing and daily functioning.
You’ll be encouraged to critically reflect on this material and to stay within your professional boundaries at all times.
The content is research-aware, not diagnostic or treatment-focused, and does not claim that TMJ work or manual therapy can treat or prevent neurological disease.
What you will accomplish
Day 2
TMJ Function, Balance & Wellbeing
The jaw is closely connected with posture, breathing patterns and how at ease people feel in their bodies. In later life, stiffness, pain, falls, dental changes and long-term tension can all contribute to a more fragile sense of balance and confidence.
In this module, you’ll:
- Explore current theories about how TMJD may be associated with balance, posture and overall physical ease—especially in older adults.
- How other age-related changes may shape how clients experience their bodies and the world around them.
- Discover how gentle hands-on approaches, within your existing scope of practice, may help clients feel more relaxed, grounded and supported in their movement.
The emphasis is on comfort, relaxation and subjective wellbeing. You’ll be invited to integrate this within your existing professional scope, not to make diagnostic or treatment claims.
What you will accomplish
Day 3
TMJD Balance & Brain Health: Practical session
Practical Assessment Skills + Safe Client Adaptation
Day 3 is all about assessment and safe adaptation in real practice.
You’ll receive practical training in TMJD assessment, including:
- Movement and postural assessment
- Hands-on palpation assessment
- How to use your findings to guide a safe, appropriate session approach within your scope
We’ll also explore:
- How cognitive change can affect communication, consent and the client experience
- How to adapt touch, pace and positioning to improve comfort and support a sense of safety
You’ll also receive non-clinical educational background to support understanding of the wider context of ageing, including high-level overviews of topics such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (for background understanding only).
Please note: This training does not teach or promote massage, TMJ Therapy® or manual therapy as a treatment for dementia, Alzheimer’s disease or any other medical condition, and it does not train attendees to diagnose.
