Tracey Kiernan Welcome and Introduction: TMJD It's Not All In Your Head.
An integrated approach to a whole body problem
In this first session Tracey will welcome you to the symposium and set the agenda for the day.
We will be celebrating 25 years of TMJ Therapy®, exploring what is TMJ Dysfunction, the connections of the TMJ throughout the body, and why an integrated approach is essential to successful clinic outcomes.
Learn how and why TMJD is connected with chronic conditions such as fibromylagia, migraine and more.
Plus the connections with Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimers.
Plus how knowing how to work with the TMJ can help with a wide range of clinical presentations.

James Earls Presentation 1:
A Little Something to Chew On
Whilst we are gathered here to investigate the frustrations and challenged performance of our temporomandibular joints, they are something that should be celebrated. Without our TMJs we would look quite different, we would be eating a narrow range of foods, and, importantly, we would think very differently – if we could think at all.
The fact that we have a jaw at all is an accident of evolution. Not every species has a jaw, and our jaw developed over many years with various trial and error experiments along the way. But that initial switch from being jawless to jawed helped set us on the long path to humanity.
This brief introduction to the form and function of the TMJ will explore some of the different ‘design’ options that were open to us and why we should be thankful that we ‘chose’ the one that allowed a large brain.

John Duthie: Comfort Talk®
Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction has a multifactorial nature.
John will explain how combining procedural hypnoidal language and hypnosis with trigger point work and hands on myofascial bodywork for the treatment of TMJD, can offer a multifaceted approach that addresses both physical and psychological aspects of the condition.
He will offer evidence to support the effectiveness of these techniques.
He will also explain that this is NOT hypnotherapy but is an essential tool which can be used as an adjunct to all healthcare situations. He will indicate how and where training can be acquired and that most therapists are halfway there already; but don’t realise it.

Yulli Yamayo-Myerson:
An Introduction to Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy and The YTM Method®
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is rapidly gaining recognition as a key component in optimising oral function, TMJ health, and overall postural balance. This lecture provides dental care professionals, TMJ therapists, and bodyworkers with a foundational understanding of OMT and its critical role in addressing Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs), airway dysfunction, and craniofacial development.
Led by Yulli Tamayo-Myerson, a leading expert in the field, this session will introduce The YTM Method, a multidisciplinary approach that integrates myofunctional therapy with dental, TMJ, and bodywork interventions to improve clinical outcomes. Attendees will also learn about the YTM Tool, a patented (UK & USA) device designed by Yulli Tamayo-Myerson to enhance tongue posture and orofacial function.
This lecture is essential for practitioners seeking to expand their therapeutic toolkit and achieve better long-term results in patient care. Gain insights into the science and clinical applications of OMT and discover how it can complement your existing practice.

James Earls Presentation 2:
Exploring Rib-Neck-Jaw Relationships
Jaw tracking can be affected by head position. Head position is related to the neck, the neck is related to the rib cage, the shoulder complex is connected to them all, and the trunk relies on the pelvis, which rests on and is moved by the lower limbs.
‘It’s all connected’ has been a recurrent theme within complementary and alternative therapies for many years. Recently, the ideas and vocabulary of tensegrity (or biotensegrity if you prefer) have been popularised with various statements of the same thing. This presentation and workshop-style demonstration will give you many immediately useful assessment and treatment ideas for your clinic.
During this workshop, we will explore the connections with the jaw and the rest of the body, including movement analysis in context with postural analysis, and ideas for ‘corrective’ MET-type techniques.

FCGDent Fellow of the College of General Dentistry FICD. Fellow of the International College of Dentists
Between 1975-1979 John completed the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced foundation training with the British Society for Medical and Dental Hypnosis ( affiliated to the RSM Dept of Psychosomatic Research). He applied this to all aspects of his work during his career.
In 1980 John started his Royal College Membership training, was appointed the Postgraduate Dental Tutor for Liverpool and went on become a DGDP (UK ) RCS founding Examiner. 1992 - 2005 Hong Kong 1995 and an International Trainer for the International Society for Computerised Dentistry in CEREC. He was also a Northern European Consultant to 3M ESPE for 28 years. ( Material Science )
At Liverpool University Dental Hospital; ( NHS Part-time ) He treated medically compromised, and nervous patients using sedation and procedural hypnosis to maximise placebo effects and amplify drug responses.
In preparation for his retirement from clinical dentistry and surgery he completed the necessary training in Hypnosis and Counselling to become registered with the National Society for Hypnotherapy
Now retired from clinical surgery John provides Procedural Hypnosis at ‘The Abbey by Duthie Dental’. He is an Assisting Tutor on the BSCAH Foundation courses for anaesthetists and healthcare professionals.
After a long and varied career, John believes that advanced rapport skills and focused attention techniques should be integral to all healthcare provision and that this should be a whole team approach.
To this end, he is delighted to be able to take part in this symposium as he has used trigger point massage combined with hypnoidal techniques to enhance compliance with appliance therapy; such as Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibitors.
John believes that recent research ( much provided by the work of Dr Lang ) demonstrates that a failure to use ‘Procedural Hypnosis’ in interventive healthcare may be……’An Act of Omission’.

What's My Investment?
What is it costing you to not invest in this symposium? Every massage therapist, and allied health professional should know how to work with TMJ Dysfunction. The World Health Organistaion has stated that 1 in 4 people have TMJD. There has been a sharp rise in cases since the Covid-19 pandemic. TMJD is connected to a range of other chronic pain syndromes and could be the missing link for a succesful oucome for your client.
